Outfit Log: Gray Day

I woke up this morning to dark gray skies and rain. I suppose this outfit came pretty quickly from that, with the bold red necklace to liven it up a little bit. Everything thrifted except for tights (and necklace via Ebay).

Overall it was a quiet, somewhat low-mood day... hasn't been a very productive week at the Lab, and I'm looking for exactly what to work on next. I often have a hard time not knowing what my next project will be, not having yet come up with an idea that drives me to work on it...I'm impatient and want the ideas to come immediately! Because of that, I was doing a lot of thinking today about the idea of having an artistic practice, and what that might mean for someone in my field of performance technologies. I think I still haven't figured out for myself exactly what to do when I'm running low on ideas, or don't have a particular large project to work on...if I were strictly a choreographer, I'd go into the studio for a bit every day and see what I came up with. If I were a writer, I'd do a lot of freewriting. But with software or technology, there's more of a need for me to have an idea before I can start experimenting...so what could that sort of artistic practice look like? I suspect it's time for me to do a lot of little projects. Temporarily forget about "having to have an idea no one's ever had before." Forget about "having to have a giant, exciting idea." Try many little things, give myself the permission to have some failed experiments, and see what ideas come out of that work...

Hey, I think I have that exact skirt. It's such a great winter item, right?! Sorry to hear you are having trouble at the lab. Hopefully you come up with something to work on next soon so you can be at peace with it all. - Katy

The necklace adds a great bright touch.  I can see your dilemma about the creativity in performance technologies.  Are you familiar with the work of Quixotic Fusion in the KC area?

"I woke up this morning to dark gray skies and rain" - the story of my life in London! Do you write software?  I think there are endless possibilities to be creative in software - I have a friend who combines a love of and ability to play music with academic research in writing software that recognises musical patterns and even how to compose poetry!

Yes, I write a fair amount of software as part of my research...typically for musical/theatrical performance situations.  My own combo of enjoying both technology design and performance art practice.   It's interesting for me to see the difference between the creativity involved in coming up with software applications (as it's possible to have lots!) and the creativity involved in the actual process of writing code (which also can be a lot.  Sometimes this is a good thing...sometimes less so, when my "creative" answer is unnecessarily more complex than a straightforward one)...

So funny that you've got the same exact skirt!  It's definitely a great winter piece...probably one of my heaviest-weight skirts.

Yeah, I'm hoping to soon start working on some new projects and get back to a place of feeling productive (interesting that I'm probably at my most peaceful when "productive"...)

I'm somewhat familiar with Quixotic Fusion...I first heard about their work from you, I believe!  Some of their multimedia stuff is just incredible...really taking advantage of the technology to create a powerful performance experience (as contrasted to using technology for the sake of technology or for the sake of the "shiny new cool").

Have you gotten a chance to see any of their their stuff in person?  I'm going to have to be on the lookout for performances near me, because I bet it would be even more stunning live...
